Mansion After Hours: Devil in the White City: Fact, Fiction, and the World’s Fair of 1893

  • Barker Mansion 631 Washington Street Michigan City, Indiana (map)

One of the most celebrated works of creative nonfiction in recent memory, Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City weaves together the extraordinary ambitions of architect Daniel Burnham and the dark crimes of H.H. Holmes against the backdrop of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. This special Mansion After Hours program brings that story to life at the Barker Mansion with a lecture, rare artifacts, food sampling, and a self-guided mansion tour.

The evening includes a lecture on The Devil in the White City, a special presentation of Barker family World's Fair artifacts purchased during their visit to the exposition, and samples of foods that made their debut at the 1893 Fair.

Following the presentation, guests are invited to explore the mansion on a self-guided tour. Guests should plan to arrive up to 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.
