Indiana Dunes State Park Beach
Right on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, Indiana Dunes State Park Beach is one of those places that literally makes you stop and say “wow.”
With nearly three miles of sandy shoreline and towering dunes rising up behind you, it feels wild and rugged while still being easy to get to.
Locals treat it as a classic summer hangout, while visitors from all over come to see what makes the Dunes so special.
This is one of Indiana’s most iconic beaches and only about a 30 min drive from La Porte.
The Park
The beach is part of Indiana Dunes State Park, which covers over 2,000 acres of dunes, forests, wetlands, and prairie. Trails connect right down to the sand, so you can pair a hike with a swim.
The dunes themselves are a huge draw, some rise nearly 200 feet above the shoreline! There’s a little bit of everything here: wide sandy stretches, shaded picnic areas tucked back from the beach, and great views of the lake.
The beach and park are open year-round (yes, people even visit in winter to see the snowy dunes!), but swimming season typically runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Lifeguards are usually on duty during the peak summer months. Hours for the park itself are generally 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., but beach hours and swimming restrictions may vary depending on weather and lake conditions.
Indiana Dunes State Park charges a daily gate fee:
$7 per vehicle with Indiana license plates
$12 per vehicle for out-of-state visitors
Annual passes are also available for frequent parkgoers.
* Keep in mind that the state park is separate from the Indiana Dunes National Park nearby - each has its own fee structure.
There are large parking lots near the beach area, though they fill quickly on hot weekends.
A gate fee is charged for entrance to the state park.
Dogs (pets) are not allowed on the swimming beach portion of Indiana Dunes State Park.
They are allowed in other parts (on leash), but not in the swim-area portion.

Can I fish from shore?
You bet!
Fishing is popular along the Lake Michigan shoreline, and Indiana Dunes State Park is no exception.
Depending on the season, anglers reel in perch, trout, salmon, bass, and catfish.
Shore fishing is permitted in designated areas outside the guarded swim zone.
Make sure to bring a valid Indiana fishing license.
